Opening the Vault. 110 female identifying artists were noticed in this immersive exhibit inside an empty bank vault.

In an empty vault/solo art space in D’Art Center, Norfolk, VA , 110 female identifying artists were noticed. 10 female artists who shaped art history, 10 local female artists currently contributing to the creative landscape of the NEON District, VA, and 90 contemporary artists making a powerful statement with their artwork.

From March 18th to April 11, 2023, our latest installation “NOTICE” a girl noticed exhibit — premiered as an immersive art experience, covering the walls and floor with the names of 110 female artists in D’Art Centers solo exhibition space “The Vault”. The names were accompanied by cliche headlines as if to “promote” or “advertise” the artists, signifying how the female artist has never in history been marketed as valuable, and suggesting the viewer reflect on how we value women in today’s society. Large portraits of notable female contemporary artists were painted as if seen through the names and the names were heard being read and repeated on a loop.

A big thank you to YES WE ARE MAD studios for your generous support.
